Apply a class to a layout area?

Is it possible to add a custom class to a Layout area, I have been playing with the getThemeAreaClasses but I can't seem to get the right handle, is it possible to add custom classes to layouts?

There was an issue with area classes not trickling down to sub areas added inside them. While not technically a bug it seems like these classes should inherit. There was a pull requset recently that added this functionality in so it'll be out in 5.7.2.2.
