Extending Content Block with embedded block/addon

Hi Team Concrete5,
I would like to develop an extension for the content block that can be inserted while adding/editing text just like you can add an image from the content block toolbar.
Any ideas/pointers/examples are welcome (Concrete5.7).
Features that would be well served with this include:-
- block quotes while adding regular text
- social media buttons:- like, share,
- simple addons that can be included within text

The content block uses Redactor, so the first step in making a plugin would be the Redactor documentation.

Redactor is currently at version 10 and concrete5 5.7 uses Redactor 9. The upcoming concrete5 5.7.4 will include Redactor 10.
