Page Search - Limited?

I'm not sure if this is intended behaviour but the page search(as it currently stands) is pretty bad.
In 5.6 you could search pages by type and date in 5.7 this seems to be much more about all the attributes. I don't see a way to be able to search pages by page types or public date.
It only looks like its possible to search by attributes? and in my case this in 80% of the attributes I don't need to be able to search by.
The advanced search also has a few extra options like "Approved" that gives an error if you use the "Unapproved" search
What does Full Page Index actually do within the search?, I thought that was a boolean for pages, but selecting it in the advanced search just shows a small text box.
Is this stuff customisable? am I missing something
