Updates not working

Hi all,
After trying all the common ways to see what version of CC5 I am running I had to eventually load website > view page source > view elements , to see that I am running concrete5 - 5.7.5.12 , However when I go into > dashboard > system settings > update concrete 5 > check for updates > page goes through load process and no updates are listed ?
Do updates need to be installed manually. My concrete 5 was a one click install on dreamhost.com I have been able to run one update using the process above. How does the upgrade process work , I imagine there would be many changes with version 8+ such as theme compatability. Any info to exaplin this to someone who has onle been using this for a few days would be most appreciated.

Make sure you backup your database and your file structure first!
