Why the version numbering?
For most people, it would seem reasonable that 5.7 is a minor version upgrade to 5.6.
Obviously this is not true, but given how significant a departure this version is, why wasn't it given a significantly different version number?
Concrete5 version 6.0?
Concrete5 Plus Version 1.0?
Concrete6?
It just seems like you're asking for confusion and misunderstanding. Yes, you clearly state on this site there's no upgrade path, but 80% of users will not visit this site until after they've had problems.

As a C5 noob I agree.
Further, are 5.6 add-on compatible with 5.7? It appears not based on the catalog filter but I'd hope they were since there are few 5.7 add-ons.

'fraid not. 5.6 add ons and themes are not directly compatible and need 'converting'.
What you see in the 5.7 pages is what there is at the moment.

The current versions are 6.3.2 and 7.2.1. Conveniently referred to as 5.6.3.2 and 5.7.2.1.
As for the rest of your comments about confusion: Yes.
