Conversations in v8.1.0?

I've gotten v8.1.0 running and started looking at some of the features I am interested in and have questions about Conversations. I was hoping for something along the lines of the Discussions Forums add-on in the 5.6 group. The Conversations are nice, but I don't see how to have a Subject or Heading to make the individual threads useful for my application. I also didn't find a Discussion Forum add-n for the v7 and up?

Am I missing something? Should I have installed v7 instead? The forum here is quite nice, but I don't see how to reproduce it.

The conversations feature is the best way to create a forum. However, you would also need to make use of the Topics feature for organizing your site into a forum.

I know it can be done with the core, but there is no how-to or tutorial on how specifically to set one up.

Oh my, so some experimentation is in order. Obviously they have done a custom form that handles both the Topic and the Conversation together. That seems to be the trick. Hopefully someone will enlighten us. Please? I can send donuts, or beer!
