Dear Users, which wishes do you have?

Hi!

I think it would be cool if we knew what our dear c5 users (not developers) would like to see on their sites for the next year.

Be careful with wishes, they can become true :)

So just shoot your ideas!

Cheers

Indeed. Too often software matures because of ideas developers had instead of real needs from the operators. What site owners are asking for would be very helpful to hear as we make plans for 2011

I agree, I am kind of shooting in the dark for things I "think" people need. It is unsettling to devote a lot of time to something and not know if anyone actually needs it, so people please speak up! :)

I would like to have a simple blog block on the main page where I can post information on the main page. Does that currently exist?

yes. check out the blog section in the demo content. If you don't have the demo content, setup a trial here on our get started page:

I'd like to know, too, because I have some ideas, but nothing I feel would be popular enough to justify spending time programming.

Isn't there a Block Request forum for these types of requests?

::looks up::

Oh wait... there it is!

:)

Sorry, You misread it Lucas. It's not regarding block request here.

I think it would be nice to be able to post topics, blogs etc without needing to choose a page first. A bit like wordpress I guess, just add the article. This would then make it possible to extend this so its possible to update from separate apps, email etc as it would be written to database. I love the c5 structure 99% of the time, but there are one or two times where your just making a new article and want to choose a couple of tags and post. maybe a blog/news module add-on, but I think it would need some core development.

The only other point I would say is don't add features that are not essential and make c5 bloated. For me, the user experience is key and the visual from-end editing experience that is currently easy to learn is a key selling feature amongst many others.

Otherwise some high quality add-ons. I think a flexible resource booking system would be nice, with different resources, rules and capacity (think dentists, massage, training etc etc)

Jordan is right David,

Any one of those blogs are fine.

SimpleBlog has a static content and tags table that bypasses the Core attributes system. very basic, simple, and nearly exactly what you refer to here.

Be careful what you ask for. I have thought of many things, but am still investigating whether I have missed them or there are not workarounds already.

Let's start with a few:

1. Support for browser display of image title as Alt text for things like slideshows.
2. Support for making the home page of another domain appear in a block, so one can use one C5 site as a front end to multiple sites using different CMSs. E.g.http://constitutional-courses.org... . Yes, I know I can just link to them but it would be cool to just show pages from other sites, like Google maps.
3. A page information block that shows the update date, path, etc., so if the page is ever copied somewhere there will be trackback information.
4. An auto-generated "what's new" page that shows what pages have been added or modifed, but only one for a given page per day, so every minor revision isn't listed.
5. A donations page that obtains information from donors of the kind needed for election campaigns (occupation, employer, address), or what special project is being supported.
6. A real-time site stats indicator that can open into a dynamic report on how many people are visiting which pages.
7. Better support for video sites other than YouTube.
8. Event planning module that would enable people to set up their own meetup-like group.
9. Support for PowerPoint slideshows, with synced audio files.
10. Support for surveys, quizzes, etc.
11. Support for article endnotes, perhaps by importing word processor files that have them.
12. Selective zooming of blocks for the sight-impaired.
13. An internal wiki.
14. Support for one "My posts" request through all forums.

More later.

For an example of how to improve the slideshow block seehttp://www.firstinpeace.com/ , which presents a title, forward/back buttons, and image selection buttons. I would change those to numbers, so it would resemble PowerPoint.

the billboards block has image titles, forward and back buttons, and clickable image numbers:

> 1. Support for browser display of image title as Alt text for things like slideshows.

I agree that the built-in slideshow block is not very well implemented (background images are used, images are not pre-loaded, etc.), but there are alternative blocks available.

> 2. Support for making the home page of another domain appear in a block, so one can use one C5 site

While I'm generally not in favor of users mucking around with HTML, what you're requesting is quite easily achieved with an IFRAME element. You might want to check into that and just use a C5 HTML block to add it to a page.

> 3. A page information block that shows the update date, path, etc., so if the page is ever copied
> somewhere there will be trackback information.

I'm not clear on what you mean by "trackBack" information. C5 automatically preserves page URLs such that if a page is moved within the site hierarchy, it's still accessible at the old URL.

> 4. An auto-generated "what's new" page that shows what pages have been added or modifed, but only
> one for a given page per day, so every minor revision isn't listed.

You might want to check into the page list block. I'm not sure if it will meet your needs or not, but it's worth a look.

> 5. A donations page that obtains information from donors of the kind needed for election campaigns
> (occupation, employer, address), or what special project is being supported.

When you say "obtains information" do you mean the ability to accept payments? If all you're looking to do is capture data entered by site visitors, you might want to check out the form block.

> 6. A real-time site stats indicator that can open into a dynamic report on how many people are
> visiting which pages.

That's probably best handled by a 3rd party service. Just google "real time site statistics."

> 7. Better support for video sites other than YouTube.

There'a a video block in the marketplace.

> 8. Event planning module that would enable people to set up their own meetup-like group.

The Google Calendar service is free, and then you can add an event feed or even embed a calendar into a web page on your site.

> 9. Support for PowerPoint slideshows, with synced audio files.

Dunno about that one. There might be cloud services that could help you there.

> 10. Support for surveys, quizzes, etc.

Have you seen the built-oin C5 survey block?

> 11. Support for article endnotes, perhaps by importing word processor files that have them.

Can't help with that one. Might be a rather niche market for a block.

> 12. Selective zooming of blocks for the sight-impaired.

That's probably best handled at the OS level. The Mac OS, for instance, allows you to easily zoom in regardless of the app you're using.

> 13. An internal wiki.

This has been discussed elsewhere in the forums. Depending on your needs, C5 with advanced permissions enabled might be able to do everything you need.

> 14. Support for one "My posts" request through all forums.

I don't have the forum block, so I can't help you there.

I did not feel a particular block was worth what the developer wanted. It took months before I broke down and got the block. Now I waisted all that time, and the block is awesome!

We NEED a free trial option for paid blocks!!!

I started a new forum thread titled "Sandbox Block" in hopes we could brainstorm the design and figure out how to make it work.

Sounds intriguing -- what block was it?
