Styling the Page List Block - no longer working

Previously I used the very clear "Styling the Page List Block" originally posted by pvernaglia at weblicating.com.
However I recently updated to concrete5 Version 5.4.1.1 and the tutorial no longer seems to work.
I am still learning Concrete5 but I noticed the new version has some new code "$target = $cobj->getAttribute('nav_target');".
Does anyone know how or where to find new instructions for styling page lists.
