Tabbed Content

Permalink 1 user found helpful
Would anyone be interested in a block for tabbed content that uses the jQuery UI tab plugin seen here:
http://ui.jquery.com/demos/tabs/...

Right now I've been using this plugin in the regular content block, but it doesn't actually work right when I'm editing the content in the wysiwyg editor...I just have to switch to HTML mode. I'm thinking it would be cool to have a block specific for creating tabbed content, with options for selecting transition type (fade,slide,etc.)

I'm pretty sure this would be quite useful to me, but I just wanted to get some input from others...

I would love to see this as a block! I think it would be a great addition. I would also love to see a content slider like this one:

i love the slider block idea! i'm actually usually a similar effect on a non-C5 site i do, so having the ability to do it automatically in C5 would be great!

Sorry for the slow down on this. It's about 85% complete...just haven't had the chance to finalize it. I'm going to say probably another two weeks - I'm going to be out of town for a little while and honestly don't have much intention of spending a lot of time on the computer :) Forgive me!

Just came across this in another thread and something along these lines would be great...

http://tools.yootheme.com/extensions/yoocarousel...

It could kill two birds with one stone as it could be used as both a tabbed brower and also a slider.

i know there's a lot of folks out there (or at least a few) that are looking forward to this block, so i apologize that i hadn't had much time to work on it lately - been pretty busy with other projects. i'm going to make it a priority this coming week and am setting a goal to complete it by one week from today.

i will keep everyone updated on the progress in the coming days. thanks

On target to finish tomorrow! I know folks are waiting on this one...thanks for your patience. It's been a busy summer! If I don't finish it tomorrow I will give it to anyone who has asked about it thus far for free! Otherwise it will be 5 bucks.

I will require version 5.3 in order to take advantage of the Scrapbook page in the Dashboard (5.3 is where Scrapbook was added to the dashboard right?). I had originally planned on simply creating the content within the block itself, but using the newer Scrapbook functionality will allow the block to "tabify" other block types, rather than just HTML content.

Well, it's been submitted to the marketplace. Apparently my claim that I would give it away for free if I didn't finish it today was enough to motivate me to get it done (it will be available a mere $5).

As I mentioned in my previous post, it requires version 5.3 of C5 in order to take advantage of the custom scrapbooks feature. This allows the contents of the tab to be any other block type available on your site.

Until it's approved by the official C5 folks, you can view a demo athttp://www.sixeightmedia.net/concrete5.3.2/tabbed_content/...

jgarcia - the demo looks awesome in Firefox but doesnt seem to be working in IE7 - it looks like it's throwing a javascript error or something. I attached a screenshot so you can see what it's doing.

thanks for letting me know. seemed to be working in IE8. i have tested in FF3, IE8, Safari (on mac and pc) and it does seem to be working in those. the IE7 bug looks to be an easy fix - i'll adjust asap and get a new version to the C5 team before they post it in the marketplace (hopefully).

Firstly this block is fantastic – great work Justin, i know there was a lot of hard work and time put in this.

I thought it was a particularly interesting (and clever) decision to use the scrapbook to grab the content here thus allowing embedding blocks in blocks.

My wonder/worry is whether the scrapbook has any sort of capacity — on the site i have built the main content of the site will rely on each page having a tabbed content block, and thus a separate scrapbook. Also the site will grow by about 50 of these pages in a year (20 or so will already exist on the site) And thus i could over time be looking at 100 separate scrapbooks.

Anyone know if there is a limit to the number of scrapbooks? I guess, knowing c5 to be pretty robust, that this won't be a problem and the only limitation is my own neuroses about wanting to keep things tidy — perhaps in the long run a scrapbook manager will be necessary to put scrapbooks into folders.

the scrapbook tabs block is probably great for most situations, but yeah, in your situation managing all those scrapbooks might be a pain. You can always just make up a new page type, where an entire area is expandable with javascript. For any one that's made page types before and knows a little javascript, it would probably take only about 5-10 minutes to do:
<a href="#" onclick="$('#expandoAreaWrapper').toggle(milliseconds);return false">More Info</a>
<div id="expandoAreaWrapper" style="display:none">
<?
$a = new Area('Expando Blocks');
$a->display($c);
?>
</div>

thanks olay! glad you're able to put this to use!

i doubt there is any limit to the number of blocks you can have in a scrapbook or the number of scrapbooks you can have in total. of course, if you were to have an incredibly large number of scrapbooks, you might eventually notice some sort of lag in load time, but you'd probably have to have a totally unmanageable number of scrapbooks before that happens. even though 100 scrapbooks is a lot, i still doubt that would affect performance in any way.

i would guess, as the core team release new versions, the features of the scrapbook would continue to grow, as it has already since the initial release of C5 - if the demand calls for it. if you have any specific thoughts or suggestions, feel free to share as i'm sure the c5 team would be glad to listen and see if they are feasible.

Tony – i'll investigate this option for other purposes – very kind of you to start me off with some code.

Hello,
I'm still new at Concrete5, so I just came across this discussion today. I'm also in need of a good tabbed block for my sites.

This seems like a good element designed by jgarcia.

Is there anywhere to see a demo of this add-on? The Concrete5 listing page points to a non-functional URL.

Thanks,
Matthew

jgarcia,
Thanks for your response. Yes, that looks good.

I am looking for a tabs function that is minimal in design, but with smooth (elegant) transition options. Seems like you have it!

Thanks again,
Matt

PS: Sorry about the double post! I don't know how that happened.
