2012 Theme Contest
Permalink
Submission of themes is now open athttp://c5addicts.us
Howdy folks. I'm getting started on planning a theme contest in March of this year, and thought I would let the community weigh in on it. That's what this is all about, using the community to help populate the Marketplace with high quality themes.
Some initial thoughts are:
Theme can be Free or Paid, but one copy must be submitted to contest demo site for community voting.
Scored by:
Originality
Complexity
Aesthetics
Features? (Menus, Blocks, Integrations)
Rules:
Submissions will only be accepted during the month of March.
Themes must install and function correctly to be accepted. Any issues will disqualify that submission.
Requirements:
Must be in the PRB by day X
Must include custom blocks
Must NOT be a port of an existing theme
Nice to haves: (These will get you bonus points.)
Should include HTML5 elements
Should be responsive
Should include custom templates for
Scoring/Judging: Based on 100 pts?
Judges rate 30/20/30/20 ? (based on the "Scored by" order from above)
Judges consist of non-entrant community members and outside parties.
Community-based voting on theme contest demo site.
1st place
2nd place
3rd place
Runner-up
Duration:
Submissions will be taken the entire month of March
Community voting will open April 1st (results are private so to not contaminate the voting/judging)
Judging will also commence April 1st
Prizes: (Here's where YOU come in.)
1 year FREE VPS hosting (1 site, 1 domain)
Possible core add-ons
Possible core swag
Possible community developers add-ons (Pretty please!)
Donated digital gift certificates
Anyway, please get me some feedback. Also, if any of you fine developers could pledge to donate some prizes, that would be excellent.

Thanks Franz. I absolutely agree. This isn't another "30 in 30" situation. I'd actually be okay with "Only 1 submission per member, so make it good."
Hey Franz, any chance we can get a promo page that we can manage setup on here like last year? Same deal, keep it hidden until you review?
Thanks,
lucas
Thanks,

I won't be entering, but will donate a Magic Heading to the prize kitty.http://www.concrete5.org/marketplace/addons/magic-heading/...
Can I also suggest adding some games to the test site. Maybe that will help draw voters in and you can have a little games contest on the side.

Interesting thought. Could you elaborate on your games idea? I love the idea of there being an incentive to vote.
Thanks for donating!

I was thinking of my (free) games add-ons.

These each have a block for the game and a block for the scores, so the theme test site could have (for each theme) either one page with a game and score, or spread the game and score blocks across pages so that each theme has each theme has a mini site so anyone playing the game has to visit at least 2 pages within the theme.
Not sure about the development on this last idea, but another way would be to limit play to one attempt at a game per theme, so if they want to have 3 attempts at a game, they have to view it under 3 themes. Maybe you could hack the controller for the game block with an on_load event so that it triggered a theme switch each time the block was rendered.

Sounds like fun. Not sure whether scoring for complexity is a plus or a minus; something to strive for or eliminate? Also, custom block will drop me out as I can't site php to save my life.

That's a valid point Steve. I'll take a look at making that a "Nice to have."
Is that complexity of the design, or complexity of the code?
Personally I would score something well for maximising the first while minimising the second.

I think it's more of a 'design' term. It's probably the wrong word to use, but relates closely to custom functionality included with the theme. So, you'd get bonus points for including all the bells and whistles.
what about custom templates counting as a custom block?
depending on the complexity/functionality of the custom template it could.
This sounds like fun. I like how you are always doing these contests. Keep me reminded and I'll throw something in.
Mmmm, sounds good!
I think it should be at least HTML5, CSS3 and Responsive.

You're damn right you're chipping in. Who else is going to code the theme demo site?
>.<
I'm in!! I have several ideas for themes, one I just started work on!
I'll donate a couple of my add ons to anyone that submits a free theme with these features, and I can be a judge.
"Community voting will open April 1st (results are private so to not contaminate the voting/judging)"
everyones a judge!
everyones a judge!
whoops, missed that. how is there going to be a check to see if the theme makers don't vote for their own?
I shall add that in ;)

An official page and announcement on concrete5.org is forthcoming.
Stay tuned for any updates, here, there and from @c5addicts on Twitter.
P.S. Any developers who want to donate prizes to the contest, now is the chance! You'll get mad props and links to your profile from what's probably going to be the hottest site on the Internets soon.

I'd look for ways to encourage quality over quantity this year.
