A bit confused - how do I build a site from scratch?

Okay, so I've downloaded and installed C5, have spent a while looking for info on building a site from scratch and can't seem to see anything. I've seen a tut for converting a theme but as a developer who is used to using straight css,php and xhtml I'm a bit stuck as far as designing from the start in C5.

making a theme for C5 really isn;t that hard, following that how to does a good job of showing the basics.
