"Really" slow load times...
My site has slowed down to 20s load time after the update to the latest version (it was already really slow on 10s average). I am on mediatemple gridserver and the site ishttp://virtualbackoffice.co.uk
I love C5 but this is wearing down my client's patience. Any ideas of what might be causing it. I have Production enabled in the debug mode and caching is on. I tried the Zend solution but it mucked up the site.

Ok, so I got Zend to work but it hasn't helped.
don;t use MT grid hosting, it sucks for c5, dedicated and vps arn't bad though.
I'm beginning to think that I may have to transfer to dv.
Any other suggestions though about how to crank even the tiniest improvement in load time? The worst part is that it just seems to freeze without loading anything at the beginning and then it all appears after a few seconds. There's definitely a bottleneck somewhere.

probably the db, or you can change to c5 hosting or hostgator or someother hosting service
C5 load time isn't good on Media Temple Period.
I had/have the same problem dpesign. Right now I have a c5 site on our dv media temple server. I have it on the highest ram and bandwidth settings and I'm still getting 8-20 second page loads with emergency cache on depending if i'm logged in or not.
I also have a site on a hostgator shared server and its got about 4-10 seconds load times depending if i'm logged in or not.
Our clients and bosses are loving c5 as well but absolutely hating the load as well. Its really the only downside to things. But its painful enough.
The c5.org page took me about 5-10 seconds to load on my computer and I'm on a 24" iMac so its not like my computer is that old.
I hate to compair C5 to Wordpress because its not the same thing at all but my blog on my hostgator server loads in 900 MS.
That said we also have a client running on the c5 hosting that they offer and I'm seeing about 4-5 seconds of load time. As well as running on my localhost C5 is extremely fast!
I do have a site also running on a DV Media Temple server. Its the only site on it, and has APC caching and its loading in 800MS to 1.16seconds.
Thats my complete honest input and the results I've gotten as of today.

Oh dear, I think that settles it for me. I may just have to remake it in Wordpress. Much as I love C5, I can't afford to waste time on getting it to run faster, when this is a client demand, when it is out of my hands.
Unless some 'very' robust defence of C5 is forthcoming or a solution is offered, consider this me abandoning ship until a fast version is released. I am realising that it can't be the database since all my wordpress sites run just fine on the same server...

This might just be in my head but it seems like my sites slow down after I add advanced permissions to them. I have no evidence just a theory.
woah man, hostgator is loading speedy for me, even with the cache disabled,http://alpha.mnkras.com is one i just setup
Yep your site is quicker than mine. Its loading in about 1.26 seconds. Could be my shared server.
Blew: You're on crack. Concrete5.org loads in under a second for me always, unless I'm on a old wireless 801.11g network or something. The only exception to that is there are a few areas in my account and the forums that have big ass sloppy queries that have just been poorly optimized over time, we're gonna fix that in our next push to concrete5.org, but that's just us being sloppy in our single page extensions, nothing fundamental about concrete5 the cms creating overhead.
pdesign: I notice you're loading a lot of stylesheets and javascript you don't have to, this tutorial might help:

I'm not sure it really will on mediatemple's grid tho...
I've heard of people getting decent performance out of media temple grid but it seems rare. I've also heard that there are actually several different parts to their grid, some faster than others, so it's quite possible you're just on the ghetto end. When I look at the activity monitor on your site the lag seems to be before ANYTHING is being served, so if you really do have full page caching on in the dashboard that's pretty disappointing. I mean at this point we're talking about a couple of queries to a mysql database and the rest is just static files so I'm really not sure what else can be humanly done.
I can tell ya there are plenty of webhosts out there that handle concrete5 just fine, even budgety ones like Bluehost, sitecloud, etc.
Push comes to shove, this starts to become an IE6 type issue for us... Mediatemple's grid is considered by many to be unacceptably slow, period. There's only so far we're willing to go to support the lowest common denominator... .. But don't take my word for it:

I call them like I see them. :)
Today I'm getting better times. My website on hostgator is loading in around 1 second.
C5.org is loading in 3-5 seconds however I did have a long load getting to this page. Attached is a screenshot.
I'm done now.

you know i love you b:lew. I didn't mean you were like... ACTUALLY smoking crack. ;)
The forums are a bit of their own beast at this moment - but if you look at the home page or any of the doc, about, regular pages - you should have a nice regularly fast experience.

Phew, cause crack is whack.
I understand that some pages are going to be quicker than others. I will say, from what I've learned virtual server just suck in general.
annnnnd..... I'd like to take this time to express my love for franz and C5. :)
Without out you guys I probably wouldn't have a job in the industry and be enjoying it... at all. Drupal and Joomla just don't cut it. I now, can come to work every morning knowing that work is going to be enjoyable cause of C5 easy of use and great community....
Even though Wordpress is nice. Its NOT a CMS and this is where C5 will always kick its ass anytime.
Ok I'm done with this sappy stuff now.
Franz is da man!

blah you don't need to inflate my ego, if there's truly a speed issue fundamental to concrete5 at this point we certainly want to fix it.
Since 5.4.1 I'm just not confident there is. With full page caching on we've eliminated so many queries that I can't really imagine what else we would do. concrete5.org is still an older version of concrete5 and there's a lot of custom scripting that has matured in strange ways over time so looking at this site as the performance gold metal standard is a mistake.
That being said, as a whole I hear people have a snappy experience with concrete5 on budget hosts like bluehost, so I just don't know what else we can do... is it really a concrete5 issue, or is it a server issue (as I said media temple grid is thought to be slow by many who have never heard of concrete5 as well)
