Cheers John, I had a look at that a day or so ago and considered buying it this week but a thought occurred - if concrete5 version 5 comes out then the book will be out of date is it worth buying it?

I'd love to see a step by step guide as to how a block is made. I guess I'll figure it out.

I don't know of such a tutorial. I would recommend the book, though. Most of the changes in 5.5 are related to how the dashboard is organized and looks. I don't think anything will change for building your own blocks though.

And once you get the ball rolling a little bit, I would recommend using Designer Content (http://concrete5.org/marketplace/addons/designer-content... ) to create a super-simple block with just 1 textfield, then examine the code it generates -- this will show you basically the bare-bones minimal implementation of what a block must have in order to function.

My understanding is that the under the hood the programming of blocks and single pages will remain the same, but with some additional facilities available. The editing interface will have a sexier look, but be mostly compatible, and dashboard stuff will require a bit of work. Last Friday's Totally Random web cast was particularly good. Its the first time I have grasped the overall concept of version 5.
Personally, I would still get the book. But different people have different approaches to learning. What works for me may not work for you.
