I don't have complete answers to your questions, but I wonder if you've made any progress with them.
With regards to your second question, the answer seems to be YES. The Discussion Forums module does just that.
I am more interested in creating a collection that is NOT linked to any particular page, but instead, it gets filtered on a single page, depending on user permissions.
Any ideas/feedback welcome.
