Best way to build site locally on mac

Hi I was wondering if anyone could provide some advice. I need to build a site locally on my mac desktop. Once complete I can then upload the lot. Does anyone have a good solution for this for the mac?

Great software, there is a free version that lets you have one site and a pro version which allows multiple sites.

I have
/Applications/MAMP/htdocs/index.php but it tells me there is a 404 not found even thou it's there?

All works a treat now. Is there anywhere within this site any notes ets on moving the site from local to live so I can get a heads up before I switch it over
