Can't update to latest Concrete5

My website is no longer available for me to edit.
Message I received from Machighway support:
Older versions of Concrete5 do not work correctly with PHP 5.4, so you will need to upgrade your Concrete5 installation.
Problem: Site would not allow me to upgrade (couldn't find something?)and I have no idea how to fix this. Something about permissions, as I read in another post?
How am I going to get into my site?

can you lower your php version in your cpanel back to what it was?
Have been messing around with this for a couple of days - went to cpanel and can't figure out how one can change php back as you suggested. I found php my administration - didn't know what I could do with it.
