CMS research survey -10 easy questions
Permalink
Hello,
My name is Lance Scaife-Elliott and I am a Masters in Design (research) student at the University of Technology, Sydney.
I am conducting research examining the possibilities of how to introduce students to building dynamic web sites with a content management system.
You are here because you love COncrete5 as do I and I want to engage more students.
If you are a designer can I please I take 5 minutes of your time to answer these 10 questions:
http://www.independentdesign.com.au/whichcms/whichcms-designer-surv...
or if you employ a web designer/ developer I have 10 questions for you too!
http://www.independentdesign.com.au/whichcms/whichcms-employer-surv...
Thank you from sunny Australia,
Lance

I also noticed the article you have linked on that site comparing WP, SS, and C5 is seriously lacking in information and reasonable data.
This represents you very poorly in my opinion.
Just sayin'

I smell a bit of spam. How can you love c5 and put articles that lack info just like ChadStrat said.
Plus I love c5 because its an awesome editior great for blogs, business, and a whole lot more.
Best of all the addons that are paid actually work. Unlike wordpress where the ecommerce addon for free doesn't work at all yet the paid one does.
At least c5 has standard which I really appreciate.
So I would first instead of criticizing c5 work with it and read the docs to see the full potential, at first it doesn't seem to have much to the blind eye but I am discovering new features every day!
Well thats my thoughts.
Cheers,
Thomas

give the guy a break, it looks like he's just doing some research for a college thing..
I'd love to provide more information but the survey looks more like its geared towards independents - which clearly im not.

frz,
No one is independent, LOL but that is the goal in academia.
Additionally I do not think there is one CMS that suits every project so this study aims to make participants aware of the differences so they can make their own informed choices on a project by project basis.

After all, he said himself as design student.
So I looked back myself when I was student... how I was doing my research....
And I didn't have to type any email there... so I didn't consider a spam.
I filled out the quiestionairs.
I can pretty much tell that he does not have enough experience as professional designer.
But again.. when I looked back myself... if I were student, and tried to conduct the same kind of research... I would have come up with the same question.
And I would have come up with the same approach.... come to this forum.... how he encourage people to fill out the survey.
Anyway, it only took me a couple minues anyway... and I didn't have to fill out any email address... so I thought it was okay.

Sounds good.
Filled out the survey as well.
Well at least he is trying to do some research which can be a bit of a pain.
Just reading over some articles as well.
Cheers.

Katz515,
Thanks for your feedback, to see yourself as others do would truly be a gift.
I am a design student in a Masters program having worked in the industry for 15+ years as a Snr Designer mostly and now as a lecturer and freelancer.
My research is for the benefit of those just entering the CMS market, in fact I hope that learning a CMS will encourage design students to more readily engage in coding activities and give jnr developers tangible outcomes when learning PHP, Rails etc.
The survey is as unbiased as I can make it as academic research, I certainly have my own personal opinions on C5 not demonstrated in the survey.
Thanks again for filling out the questionnaire and your time in doing so.

ThemeGuru, spam requires an email address, simple.
I have not criticised C5 in any way, I am simply analysing the options and letting users decide on what they feel suitable for their needs. Information is power.

Sounds good to me.
I meant more of the forum way as it seemed a bit generic but filled out the survey.

Hi Chad,
You are right, there should be a link to the C5 download, there is now. When I have time I will add links to the other CMS options too.
I agree the article comparing WP, SS and C5 is limited. One could always go tohttp://www.cmsmatrix.org/ for a more complete comparison. I do think the personal perspective is just as valid, however limited as this data is often more about the user experience than a feature comparison.
On the same page there are 5 other stories on C5 in an attempt to bring a more holistic perspective.

I wasn't flaming you per se...lol
I just felt like things could represent you poorly in light of lacking data comparison and no cross-linking.
Here is my honest feedback.
C5 is young, growing, and is still trying to hit it's stride. There will be features in every CMS that one may prefer over the another.
however....if you have a heavyweight belt for translating content delivery to your clients hands...there is no competition at this time for C5.
And as far as I am concerned...how "clients" take to a CMS is far more important than how a designer takes to it.
having said that...as a designer, you can do absolutely anything you want with C5...quite easily.

agreed Chad, clients as the end user are very important and ultimately determines whether the site will be updated or not.
My focus is on student (non-coder) engagement with coding and C5 is certainly well equipped in this area.
I am still not that buzzed that there is no central area so storing all stories in C5. In context editing is all fine except if I want to retire stories and for me this is the biggest disappointment in C5.
The 'quality' of the market place is an excellent idea and something WP and other could certainly look at.

Lance,
For "storing" old pages I'd suggest either changing permissions on the page (be sure to check out advanced permissions as well) or just move it to a node you make somewhere called "private" and change the permission on that. We do that for this site all the time.
best

filled out the survey.
typo on question 8
got an error that i'd missed a required field but didn't tell me where. you might want to make it more specific? plus, all fields are required. perhaps reconsiders making them so?
