Concrete 5 training

I am very keen to learn advanced cs5 but can't afford the huge amount $295 for a 2 hour class. The forums seem to very hit and miss as to whether you get a reply. So is there anyone out there who could teach me the rudiments of custom blocks, navigation etc...

Your best bet is to check out the How-To's in the documentation. Jordan also has some nice how-to's over athttp://c5cookbook.com

I do wish some prerecorded training sessions where available at a cheaper rate. You wouldn't get the hands on approach or be able to ask questions and get answer but it would still be informative and it would allow the core team to earn some extra $$ without having to devote any extra time per viewing.

I agree there should be far more practical walkthroughs that are accessibly priced or free. Especially when it comes to the more advanced (but crucial) elements of the system like customising blocks, custom templates, single pages etc...It is a shame that concrete 5 has so much potential that is probably not being realised by a lot of people...

c5 is still relatively new. About 5 yrs ago when I used to do Joomla development, the learning curve was so much higher and it had been out for several years (in the form of Mambo). To be honest I would much rather see the core team focused on delivering a solid product that lasts over the years than being bogged down training people.

When it comes to training that usually is handled by a 3rd party anyways. Most Dummies books are written by experts in the field, but not the creators. Same with Lynda.com and other sites like that.

To that effect what c5 really needs is a good official Wiki,(hosted on the c5 site so it is easy to find) that lets the community add to it and keep it fresh.

I hear ya guys, here's what I know

1) At least one major book publisher is working on a book. I have no idea when it will be done but I have reviewed content for it so it's happening.

2) The training is hands on with Andy or me, and not shockingly the content is being developed - shall we say in conjunction? - with actually selling a training class. The reality is we don't have the time or money to create all this content in a void and then decide how to price it. The training sessions were priced by first looking at how much training for Drupal costs (typically a grand or two for a two day session) and trying to make something more affordable than that, but with enough room left for us to be able to afford to put the content together.
Once we've done a bunch of these and actually have a choice to make, it's quite likely we'd look for a cheaper way to get some of this content in-front of you.

3) It's all about how-to's in my mind too. It's better to have different people explaining how they solve problems so people who learn in different ways might find a voice that speaks to them. We're very eager to review how-to's for accuracy and then post them to the documentation area, so if you've got anything to share please do!

Im onboard with this idea, too. I'd love to learn more but money is a consideration.

I plan to release some neat small tutorials which will help the basic users.

So keep an eye out for me.

Cool - I'll look forward to that ThemeGuru - my wish list is anything that adds added value to C5 and unlocks its potential for customisation. Controlling blocks and how they combine with CSS and how the navigation works etc
