Concrete5.org Hosting Questions

Permalink
So - my biggest gripe with Content Management Systems is the upgrade process. When you have one site - it's usually not a that much of an issue. When you start to manage 10+ sites, it really starts to get time consuming.

My questions - how is the upgrade process handled on the Concrete5.org Hosting? Also what are the specs on the hosting servers? I'd just like to know things like where the servers are (geographically), What kind of redundancy can we expect.

I'd also like to move over about 5-10 clients to Concrete5.org if it is as good as I am hoping. What kind of management tools are built in, or do I need a new account for each client (less desirable).

Thank you-
Phil

If you do go with c5 hosting they will do all the upgrades. So no more worry there!

They use a central concrete core system so they control all that stuff (i.e. updates and bug fixes).

Here is some more hosting details:

I do believe that each client must be signed up separately however c5 is in the amidst of building a multi-site manager.http://www.concrete5.org/services/msm-information/...

If you do hosting reselling the alternative is to signup for a reseller account on hostgator (their support has improved.) Its more hands on but its good if you are going to be charging clients xx/yr.

Hope this helps,

Thomas

I'm a hostgator reseller... I thought having a single core was only possible on dedicated or vps machines?

I've used Hostgator (reseller and dedicated server) in the past, and was/is very pleased with not only their hosting performance, but their customer service. I was looking to getting away from having to go to past clients and manually update their installation.

I guess what I wanted to know was a little more detail about why I should host with concrete5. I like the idea that it will be the latest version of the core.

I would like to know more about their data center. Many of my smaller clients don't get why I want to charge them for hosting when it is "free" from their domain registrar. It's nice to be able to let them know about the geographic location of the server, redundancy, history of uptime etc.

I would also like to know the uptime guarantee (SLA).

thank you ThemeGuru for chiming in. I guess I like to do a little more research before committing. I did sign up for a trial account, and I'm sure I'll end up using Concrete5 for hosting for at least one of my clients. The only thing they will be hosting is their one site - though I would love to have a "reseller" account where I can simply create new domains with Concrete5 install ready to go. Similar to Hostgators hosting reseller account.

There's a new variable which lets you define where the core is located. For example, the following will set it to the default:

define('DIRNAME_APP', 'concrete');

You can add this into /config/site.php

I haven't personally tried working with a new value in this field, but it probably would work fine like this:

define('DIRNAME_APP', '../../shared/concrete');

... or wherever you decide to put it. You could also try a root-relative URL, but I'm sure that this path is based on the native file-system of the server, so you'd have to make sure that you include all the right directories

Hi,

In the past we have performed upgrades for our hosting clients. Now that they're all on 5.4 we won't be doing that any more because as pointed out by elyon you can have multiple cores and the upgrade process can be far less painful and driven by the site owner rather than us.

That being said, the biggest single difference you're going to get by hosting with us we'll actually give you a base level of support. No that doesn't mean we'll fix your style sheet issues for you, but yes, if something goes funky with your site we'll help you figure out what is wrong and you'll never hear "gee I guess that must be someone else's fault."

In terms of server info, we host in Landsing Michigan. Our Commercial and better plans all have cPanel access, our advanced & starter plans use our own server management software. No we don't currently have a reseller plan.

Everything is backed up on local hard drives nightly. No these aren't redundant servers with a load balancer - if you need a setup like that for a large client we can certainly do a dedicated server setup, but for $7.90/month you're not going to find that anywhere.

best wishes.
