Dojo Google Translate help

Permalink 1 user found helpful
Hi all

It seems the Google Translate add-on I created has been downloaded a good few times now. Thank you.

I have had a request to make the country names in the dropdown in German and this got me thinking of adding templates to the add-on so users can select there preferred language to start with.

As I don't speak many languages, I was hoping some of the guys here can help with the translations.

Below is a list of the countries in the English dropdown. If you guys can translate these I will add templates as and when I can and build upon the free add-on so everyone can enjoy.

Thanks in advance and hope some of you can help.

Cheers

Chris

FYI:
As amazing a Google is their translation feature isn't all that accurate. It would be a good idea to have someone who speaks the language you're translating to to proof read the site.
For instance - you might try the google translator to get from English to German and then ask Remo to take a quick look at it.

I do not have the power to change what Google translates as it runs off there database so proof reading and changing is not an option. You would need to create another section of the site and translate manually, which could get expensive if you had multiple languages and you site was updated regularly.

Google translate will never be completely accurate but most clients I have used it for find it lets most users get an understanding of what is said.

Ermmm.
Why doesn't the tool just translate them with google and just let the admin choose the country for display. Or am I missing something.

It was already said before, that Google's translation isn't always accurate.

I'll give You an example. Word "Welsh" was translated by Google as "Võlga maksmata jätma", that means "Don't pay the debt" or "Not paying the debt", which of course is totally wrong considering the context. :)

I will be updating this add-on in the nest few weeks with the countries above.

@Eraser
Well. That one (Welsh) isn't correct in any context. Someone obviously thought Welsh was the same as Welch (humans aren't perfect either). But for language names, I would (tentatively) surmise that there are few instances.

But what you can do is use the Google translate to do most of it.And as people report back errors, just do an inline replace for those ones (cater just for the exceptions - I think you would get better overall coverage). That way you only have to maintain a very short single file list and if Goggles add (an)other language(s); You don't have to update lots of files for a single entry.

Just a thought. But if you're 90% of the way there already....then not much point.
