Is it possible to e-mail only people in a particular user group?

YOu should look at the "Mailing List" add-on.

It might be a bit much for your needs, but c5 doesn't otherwise offer any ability to email users.

I evaluated that and didn't like it. I remember it was due to the difficulty of managing c5 groups as mail monkey lists.
