Got a job to build a fairly simple shop. I need the usual bits plus I need a search block that can have multiple parameters (either as free text or listbox, there will be 3) and a featured products block for to appear on the front page.
Looking at C5, CScart and Big Commerce and not sure which way to jump.

Are the things like the custom search and featured products possible?
Yes, to a certain degree!
Search can sometimes be a bit strange, but very usable.
Featured products are just you plugging stuff into a block for limited time.

Use C5, most cost effective and all add-ons you ever might will all play nicely together.
Certainly a lot cheaper than Big Commerce!
