eCommerce as a way of selling downloads

Hi there. I just got my copy of eCommerce and mmm how nice it is to use so far. Especially compared with more complex systems like ZenCart etc.
I would like to sell software downloads - is this possible with eCommerce without providing a permanent link to the download, i.e. that could then be shared with people who haven't paid? Anyone got any experience of this?

it is not possible as part of eCommerce today. obviously its something we've done in the past since we're pulling it off here. We'll probably treat this as an additional (affordable) add-on since its clearly not something everyone needs or wants to pay for.

I'm in a rush. I have 1 week to get a website up and running. I suggested C5 over WP thinking it would be easier to get the site up... but, the whole point of the site is to pay through Paypal to become a "member" which allows access to the e-book downloads section. Help?
