Exception thrown without a stack frame in Unknown on line 0

I have just tried to do a manual upgrade to a site running 5.5.2.1 to 5.6.1 and got the following error: Exception thrown without a stack frame in Unknown on line 0. This happens when I try and run the manual upgrade URL
I have seen a solution in the forumhttp://www.concrete5.org/community/forums/installation/solved-excep... but it did not work for me and I was wondering if any one else may have had this problem and found a solution?

I did an update to 5.6.0.2 via the system then used the manual method to upgrade to 5.6.1 which worked a treat once I had remembered to amend the site.php file, removing the link to 5.6.0.2 and removed the 5.6.0.2 folder from updates.
Bit of a long winded method but it worked just incase anyone else experiences the same problem.
Edit: Forgot to mention that I did all this in a safe account using backups of all the files. If anyone has to use this method of upgrading I suggest you do that and not on your live site, just in case ;)
