Excluding page in nav hides children

Guys,
I have a site with a page in the top level nav which I have excluded from the nav. It has some child pages however that I want seen when people go to this page.
I have set the autonav to:
Display Pages: At top level
Sub pages to display: Relevant sub pages
Sub page levels: Display Custom - 1 level
I have tried every permutation and still can't get them to display. I think this might be a 5.6 change to the autonav.
Anybody any clues please!
