French characters in page titles

Is it possible to use french accented characters in page titles, without them being replaced with underscores? I understand they can't appear in urls, but for example instead of replacing é with _, could it simply be e? I have a couple of bilingual sites where this happens. Or is the fix to use paths (additional paths)... 'Cause that would be a pain...
we're working on this along with a few other localization improvements in this vein. There are some examples of people hacking the core to make this work in the forums .
We, Usagi Project, are also working on this issue.
