Future of concrete5?
Hi concrete5 team,
We have questions about the future of concrete5 not only for us but the agencies that we work for that heavily depend on it.
1) Is concrete5 being renamed dropping off the number 5 and being changed to "concrete cms"? If so can you please explain why you would change the name after all this time?
2) Is concrete5 starting over again like it did for v7 and v8 leaving the majority of its 3rd party devs behind?
3) Will there be an upgrade path from v8 to v9 that does not cost us our clients or agencies a great deal of time/money?
4) Will we ever see a new forum layout / functionality that has been promised / discussed for the last 7 years? If so when?
5) Will we ever see a new marketplace that has been promised / discussed for the last 7 years? If so when? We have 21 add-ons and 4 themes that we have held off submitting until the new marketplace launched. After many years we are still waiting.
6) Can we expect to see a new concrete5.org or is .org and the name concrete5 going away completely?
7) Is it true that concrete5 or concrete cms will have two different websites going forward?
8) Will concrete5 continue to have 2 marketplaces going forward? One for v8 and one for v9? Or will v8 and v9 products reside in the same marketplace?
With the future of concrete5 being so uncertain the answers to these questions can help us our clients and agencies we work for make educated decisions about concrete5 going forward.

Hi VidalThemes,
Thanks for responding, I really appreciate it.
I dont have time to watch the video now but I would rather have some official word from the core team in writing.
We cant expect our clients or agencies to watch these videos either as they most likely dont have the time. They are however watching this thread waiting for some answers. The fact that this is being ignored is not really a good look at all.
I can provide you with links to several videos over the last 5 years where the future of concrete5 is discussed but nothing ever came out of it. Is watching the new video going to lead us to the same place? This is the real question.

The discussion digressed onto documentation. So not all about the rebranding.

Hey John,
Thank you for the link. Much appreciated. Thanks for taking the time.
We would like to have some official word from the core team without having to read a mile long thread or by watching videos.
As you know I can provide you with links to many similar threads over the last several years that went no where.

From this response it feels like these questions have rubbed you the wrong way?
Maybe came across the wrong way?
Let me make it a little more clear.
We have major clients with massive amounts of money invested in concrete5. Jessica knows. Some of these clients need to make some big decisions about continuing forward with concrete5.
Is it possible to get a more clear answer then "some day" and "because? This feels not only extremely rude but very unprofessional.
Sorry to have to push back and have to be the one to do this for our clients and the community itself as a whole but we need a better answer then some day and because. Some day has not worked so far has it?
Some day actually ended our concrete5 products and sales in the past.

Couple of things to add:
7) Is it true that concrete5 or concrete cms will have two different websites going forward?
Yes, there will be concretecms.org and concretecms.com, aimed at different demographics, one for agencies/devs, the other for more DIY focused users.
The new forum is based on discourse, a dedicated forum software.
They do show some of the progress made on these projects in the video, but no firm timeframes.

Hi Hostco,
It's been very exciting times here for the last few months. We're finally getting the chance to implement changes that you correctly point out have been years in the making.
I hear you don't have time to watch all the town hall videos, I completely understand. We do try to post the key bits as standalone tidbits to the blog. Some highlights if you want to see the thinking so far are:
https://www.concrete5.org/community/forums/chat/new-marketing-strate...
https://www.concrete5.org/about/vision...
https://www.concrete5.org/about/blog/core-roadmap/version-9-sneak-pe...
https://www.concrete5.org/about/blog/community-blog/new-community-si...
Those last two actually include some comps from the current redesign we're working on and the new version 9 that will launch after the new community does.
The answers others have given you here are by in large correct. While I appreciate your clients have spent millions on solutions built with our software, I expect you understand mine have too. Do they overlap? Is it unprofessional for me to not have answered this thread within 24 hours of your posting it? I dunno, we're just doing our very best to deliver and support a great CMS that costs nothing, and trying to build a web for the greatest good of everyone. You'll have to forgive me if that takes longer than you or I would both like from time to time. ;)
That said I can tell you that we've already committed to getting the folks who have signed up for Alpha/Beta testing of the new community something to start looking at in April.
After years of financing all of this on our project work, we've finally been able to get enough runway to focus on rebuilding things the way we'd like here. In the future, the best way to increase the time we can spend on documentation, training, community building and generally being a product company that does nothing but support the world of agencies and freelancers using Concrete will be through using the DevOps focused hosting offering we're going to be launching as part of the new community. I hope that when we start to show that, you'll seriously entertain the possibility of using it for your clients through our new affiliate and services partner programs.

Hi Franz.
Thats great to hear and great news.
Please dont take me the wrong way. I have no idea whats going on or whats in the making so again thats why I am asking.
As you know these discussions and great news have been going on for a super long time now. Actually since the end of the 5.6 days when v7 launched.
Since then I have continued pushing c5 for every project that comes along saying no no no to wordpress even though the clients want it. When I do this though I am doing it with the uncertainty of I really dont know whats happening or going to happen with concrete5 because everything that has been discussed since 2014 has never came about.
Since 2014 and the harsh ending of 5.6 I have watched tons of videos, joined in on many of the live shows, chimed in on many of these discussions of this same topic over and over until I ran out of energy for it.
Now I am here asking some simple questions and its 2021.
You mention "You'll have to forgive me if that takes longer than you or I would both like from time to time. ;)"
From time to time? This has been for 7 years. I dont think this can be considered time to time.
You mention that "The answers others have given you here are by in large correct".
Are you sure about this? Have you actually read what they said? You have one member stating there will be two sites and another very long time member stating that there will be one site. So which is it? There will be two sites or one?
Would you mind answering at least a few of these questions? Can you please at least let us and the rest of the community know why you are renaming concrete5 if nothing else? This thread is already becoming confusing and this is why I directed these questions at the concrete5 core team, not the community. It appears the community is confused on whats really happening.
You are saying in large that what @tallacmac said is your response to my questions?
You are renaming concrete5 "because"?
You will launch the new marketplace "someday"?
A new forum will be added "someday"?
Is this for real? This has been said since 2014 and the time frame we are still on is "someday" after all this time? These are really the answers you would like us to give our clients? How are we supposed to put trust or faith in "someday" when everything you have said that's going to happen in the last 7 years never has?
"While I appreciate your clients have spent millions on solutions built with our software, I expect you understand mine have too. Do they overlap?"
No they dont overlap at all. Us pushing the hell out of concrete5 since 2009 has not overlapped with your clients or your software. Its actually helped it tremendously.
Maybe you dont realize the amount of traffic we still send to concrete5.org? The amount of business? Maybe this is because our karma link stopped working back in 2015? I mentioned this to Jess a long time ago but it has never been fixed. Check it out for yourself.
http://www.concrete5.org/r/-/2532...
Imagine the karma points we would have earned since 2015. Maybe this functionality was removed? I dont know I can't find anything on the subject. If not is there any way we can get this fixed? Currently our karma points are extremely inaccurate.
We would really like to continue forward with concrete5 / concrete cms to launch our products on your marketplace and get the income back that we used to have back in 2011-2014 days when the marketplace was booming. If you knew of the products we have available you would be stoked to have them on your marketplace. The only reason we have held back launching our v8 products that have been in production use since 2014 is because the current state of the marketplace forces you to offer forever support. We have already had that discussion countless times. We have been waiting since 2014 for the new marketplace to launch and we are still waiting. I think this makes us a loyal asset to concrete5 as a whole. Does it not?
As far as the hosting offering, I would seriously entertain the possibility of using the new service if we were not a hosting company :). Its great to hear that this is being added regardless as it will help the community a whole.

Hi Hostco,
Sorry if this comes across as turse, that is not my intention, but the info is there, in the videos and in the blog posts, pretty much all the answers you seek are in there, straight from the horses mouth, and a bit more besides.
If you have time for lengthy forum replies, surely you have time to watch a couple of vids, I have to be honest I don't really know what you are expecting here, you have been pointed to all the info ;)

Hey VidalThemes,
I appreciate you taking the time to respond.
I could provide you with links to dozens of videos and form posts that explain all sorts of different things that were happening or going to happen with concrete5 since 2014. I dont see the point in adding those links here and confusing this thread any further. They were all great ideas and goals that I was really hopeful and counting on actually happening. They never did. Sorry if this comes across as turse.
We spent a great deal of time and money developing new products for the new market place after our 5.6 business was turned off like a light switch. That marketplace never happened.
Do my questions make a little more sense to you now?
Now we have new videos? Will these come true? Will watching them be more time spent for things that wont ever happen? Can you blame me for thinking that its possible that this may or could happen? Those videos I watched are now old ideas that are not happening. Are the videos you watched going to come true? Are you sure? How do you know?
What am I expecting?
Some honest clarity put into some simple words from the core team.
My questions are really simple and I wish did not have to rub everyone the wrong way by asking them.
I am expecting to be treated with respect not like a number or like I am doing something wrong for asking these extremely important questions not only for our team but also for our very important clients and agencies that we work for that the core team is well aware of.

If I google for concrete5, I get concrete5.
If I google for concrete, I get many pages of cement and construction.
This is easily solved by googling for 'concrete CMS'. But why make life difficult?
I am on the fence on the rebranding. I suspect that even with the new name, in 5 years time I will still be getting business enquiries for work with 'concrete5'. I doubt if it will affect me one way or another.
Will everyone rebrand 100%? I doubt it. There is so much historical content with the '5'. I can't see Portland Labs remaking all relevant youtube videos. We will have concrete5 being used as a name in parallel with concrete CMS forever more.
I am not convinced the knock-on costs for many other businesses who have invested in '5' branding have been taken into consideration. If the new name will result in an increase in revenue for all businesses, then perhaps the overhead is worthwhile. I suspect that like many rebranding exercises, concrete5 => concrete CMS will ultimately serve little purpose. The concrete5 brand is too well established.
For those needing to update masses of content, have a look a @JB1's addonhttps://www.concrete5.org/marketplace/addons/find-and-replace...

100% agree with you. I am not convinced at all. We have invested money in the number "5" like others. I dont think this has been taken into consideration at all. All the back links, wordpress vs concrete5 comparison blog posts that still live out there, the concrete5 cheat sheet, concrete5 in other languages, cms awards I can keep going.

Hi Hostco,
Speaking for myself, as someone who had a pretty lucrative marketplace presence in the 5.6 era, that also disappeared overnight, I appreciate what you are saying, and, no, I cannot be sure any of this is going to happen.
BUT, I do believe it will. The reason being is that Franz not only talked about V9, The forum, and the new community sites, but he also talked about a shift in culture, instead of Portland labs trying to build everything themselves, they are now much more open to using existing platforms/services/codebases and modifying them to their needs, a culture shift that embraces the fact that great solutions for existing problems are all around us, it's this reason that I think things will move along at a better pace.
I also feel that moving chunks of the community to dedicated platforms will make ConcreteCMS much more agile, changing up the forums, community sites, marketplace etc won't be the mammoth task that it once was, it becomes much more manageable, and as a consequence, ConcreteCMS will be able to adapt to market and demographic changes much more quickly.
These are the main reasons I am optimistic about the future. I hope you get the assurances you are looking for.

I'm quite excited about the new version (9) and the changes at HQ. I recently review CMS's for my own personal edification and the same (j)clunky software is still out there.
@hostco, like you we've been developing and hosting concrete5 for many years and have lots of clients invested. Like you too, we've had occasional frustrations over direction or time taken to move things forward.
I've found the monthly town hall meetings a really useful way to keep up with what's going on. They tend to take less than an hour, there's an opportunity to ask questions either in advance or through the simultaneous chat and get direct answers. And, if you can't make the time, you can always catch up after.
I have to say we're feeling really positive about Concrete CMS. Version 9 is looking good, there's obviously been a lot of thought at Portland Labs about the direction/market positioning and it feels like they are in a much stronger position with the resources to see the plans through.
See you at next month's Town Hall?

Thank you guys very much for taking the time to respond with your thoughtful insight.
I feel as if I am being taking the wrong way and like what I am saying is coming off as negative instead of the truth.
I have been here since the beginning of concrete5. I have watched hundreds of videos and attended hundreds of live shows. I have spent a great deal of my life and time watching videos of whats coming next with concrete5. This ended up being a complete waste of my time as none of it came true and now its 100% not going to. Now I should watch more videos? Seriously? Can you please at least admit you understand why I might not want to spend the time?
Is it really asking to much to have something in writing from the core team to eliminate the confusion surrounding concrete5? Especially since the proposed changed have been lingering for 7 years now?
Whats the reason why we can't have a time table/ road map of whats to come in writing? Is it because its going to change again and again? Is it wrong or off to think there is a great possibility that this could happen? Why is saying this coming across to everyone as negative instead of the truth? I understand sometimes the truth does hurt but does that mean we should keep quiet about it for ever? Perhaps another 7 years?
These questions need to be answered by the core team not community members. As you can see we already have confusing conflicting responses right in this thread. For example how in the world does @tallacman not know that concrete5 will have two websites going forward of all people? Perhaps he has not had the time to watch another video?
We need a concrete5 road map. Something we can read. Not a video. Is this really asking to much Franz?

Pretty much everything you have asked is answered in the recent Concrete5 town hall videos on their YouTube channel.
