I am new to Concrete5 and recently bought this book. Very disappointed. Granted, I am still stuck in Chapter 1, but that is why I'm unhappy. The instructions tell me to install XMAPP for Windows! I use a Mac. No info. Hopefully the rest of the book isn't as useless. Customer service at Packt certainly is.

yeah to be honest that was the weirdest part of this book for me too. When I got that first chapter to review it just struck me as the most painful way to introduce the system.. I mean you can probably just one-click install the things for near free at a budget host and play with it there and basically skip all this useless local install stuff.

That being said, there are a number of MAMP+concrete5 guides out there, a simple google search produces em pretty well:

I'd love it if someone reposted those as how-tos in our documentation, which in general is getting pretty full of good content and is another good place to check.

My first impression was that that should have been part of an appendix, and evidently Remo wasn't aware of the Uniform Server for windows -http://www.uniformserver.com/

Much more up to date and secure - it already has PHP 5.4.0! Unfortunately Xdebug is not available for that version yet.

Still a great beginner's guide though.

Yeah, I agree with franz on that one (well said franz!). But otherwise I think it's a really great guide for beginners.
