The point is that I would like to be able to use a simple checkbox to omit the write to the DB (assuming it hits the DB) just to record a hit on the page. While I think the idea is awesome and that it is always nice to have another source telling you about visitors to your site, the option to offload statistics to another entity and save a bit of thrashing (writes) to the db is a good thing? Perhaps it isn't? Why would it be bad?

I would rather my stats be trusted and served to a company or entity that does that as their core competency.

We had already decided that we wanted to give people a spot to put their analytcs code in the dashboard instead of having to add it by hand to a footer.

Perhaps a "disable internal stats" check box there makes sense, it is a performance hit, but a very small one to be honest.

I understand :) It would allow for more aggressive caching if you were offloading the stats via a HTTP request, or am I mistaken? I used to make a living caching on asp.net, I have now seen the light and I am still on that mentality. One could cache until the page was changed? Filesystem caching etc?

didn't think about the database log of c5.. that's not necessary for me too, I also prefer google analytics for this job and save some db space...
