Help with a Registration/Login system

I need to figure out the suggested method of creating a user registration and login system. I know that I can enable public profiles, but I do *not* want other members viewing each others profiles, at least not at this time.
At a high level, I plan on offering a service via my website. I want people to be able to sign up, at a monthly rate of $x, and be able to utilize their service through their profile page.
Can someone point me in the right direction? Do I need to write my own code that will utilize sessions/cookies? Can concrete, out of the box, do what I want? I've asked around in the IRC room and got some tips, but I figured this would be a more pertinent place to ask the question...and I can award karma points :-)

what you can do, is use events, hook the on_user_add event and add a page and user their user id to assign permissions to that page.
Mnkras: you make it sound so easy :P I'll spend some time thinking about this. I'm sure it isn't that difficult to do. I wish there was something out of the box that would work though....
