Update: I signed up for A2Hosting and found out they no longer offer APC on their shared or reseller plans. Must have a shared or dedicated server now for APC.

Whuuuuut? that blows.

I think everyone should send them messages to "encourage" them to bring it back.

I sent them a ticket requesting better APC support and noting the 22k C5 users, a number of which were very excited about A2's APC support, and now it seems they are not offering it on shared plans.

I have a feeling the 22k C5 users might have been the reason for their policy change... To quote the support "Hello, Unfortunately this option had to be changed in order to limit server load, for APC caching you would need a vps or dedicated server. "

In my case it was quite annoying because APC WAS an option when I signed up for the plan, but then it was disabled after I had spent the time to configure a few sites. I asked for a refund.

Anyone know of any other shared host that supports APC, or a good VPS provider? It seems like other than C5's hosting, VPS/Dedicated boxes are going to be a necessity to get acceptable hosting performance.

Maybe try hosting with Subhosting.net.
Talked to their sales support, and they will install APC at no additional charge on their VPS. (starts around $20 / month)
They said they have a good number of clients using Concrete5, and that they run very well on their servers.
Just my 2 cents.

well A2 will APC install on VPS. so I may still stick with them @ 10$/mo.

Just wanted to report that I signed up with Stablehost for their reseller plan. They don't have APC either that I can tell, BUT they do run Lightspeed instead of Apache.

I had/have some sites hosted with Hostpapa. They weren't as bad as some of the others, but it was still slow.

I am happy to report that Stablehost is like night and day to Hostpapa. The C5 dashboard is very snappy - it's about 1 second when you click the dashboard button (give or take, didn't actually time it).

Still doing some testing, but I think I found (finally) a decent reseller host. They don't come with bells and whistles, you don't get 'unlimited' space and bandwidth, but they also don't compete for your design or development business. Just straightforward web hosting. And, it's one of the only ones I've seen that advertises they use Lightspeed.

If anyone wants to try out the default installation of C5 on this server, go to:
