Hosting with TMD-anyone else having problems?
I initially purchased my hosting plans through Arvixe, because at the time, they were one of the recommended hosting providers on Concrete5.org. Then Arvixe was bought out and things changed. I was having problems with reliability. So I moved all of my sites to TMD Hosting, where I am once again, having problems with reliability. My sites will go down for minutes, or even hours. When i contact TMD, they usually resolve the issue, but it looks really bad when I'm in a client meeting and the site goes down for no reason. Anyone else having this problem? Any suggestions?
Great-thank you! I will definitely look into this option. Naturally, I purchased one year contracts...about 2 months ago...(sigh).
I host with Wiredtree. It's managed VPS and private servers (no shared hosting).
You can ask them to install stuff for you, they'll do it. They moved a client's site from another host to their servers, including ssl certificates, and it was flawless.
Support is excellent. I never waited more than 1 hour for an answer and it's always someone who knows what they're talking about. I had bad experiences before with support that knew nothing so that's really important.
Their support is through a helpdesk system with no live interaction. You leave a message and they'll answer you. I never looked for a phone number so I don't know if there's one. No live chat.
But like I said, they are really fast and efficient, especially if your request for support is marked critical.
They are very proactive with upgrades and maintenance and, very importantly, security.
I've been with them for 4 years now and never had a complaint.

Thank you for letting me know that I have options! I should have asked in the forum before I switched hosts. Live and learn.
Oh and totally unexpectedly they sent me a bag of swag after about a year with them.
I was more than impressed. First there was a t-shirt that is the most comfortable thing I've ever worn, and second, they sent it to me all the way to North Africa.
Can't tell you how many times I don't get stuff because I'm not in North America so that was pretty cool.
So yes, I'm biased :)

Do you have a referral link with them?
On another note, I'm starting to like AWS EC2's more and more instead of paying a hosting provider.

Which of Amazon's many options do you use/recommend for typical c5 sites?
Hey John,
All I'm using is a standard EC2 Ubuntu Instance with Apache2/PHP5. I've got a normal IP address then linked to the instance which makes working with it no different than a paid for VPS from someone like rimuhosting or wiredtree.
If you're up to it someone could make a c5 instance that can be launched in one click, taking out the server set up work and giving you a ready to customize c5 site inside an AWS EC2. But my AWS set up is nothing special concerning c5, I just like the control I have over the server using an EC2 all the while it being free for a whole year.
So my answer to your question would be to use an EC2 instance.
Thanks,
David

Rackspace is looking good too, and just learned about OpenStack (DevStack), which they are running.
Anyone have any experience with Xen?
EDIT:
I ended up getting a dedicated server from OVH with XenCenter to start learning xen hypervisor hosting. But I still have services with rimuhosting and they continue to impress me with their dedication to good customer care. I'll be getting my next server with them once my current one is full now that I know how to use XenServer.

Amazon EC2's are pretty reliable, but must be managed by you (you can get free service for a year which is also cool)
RimuHosting is the greatest as far as reliability and customer service goes, I've been with them for over 5 years, they just get better. They aren't the type of people trying to make loads of money, so finding out about them usually comes from word of mouth, its how I found out about them many years ago. Check them out, rimuhosting.com. They provide other services too like email and DNS. Matter of fact they are the only people I know who will give you a free private domain email account (you@yourname.com), and support tickets are answered really fast. If you don't want to pay them to work on your server, they will tell you how to do it yourself. I've learned a lot from their tech support as far as managing servers goes. Read about their support reviews athttps://rimuhosting.com/support-worth-raving-about,... they aren't exaggerating either. If ever wanted a job with a hosting company, they would be my first choice.
EDIT:
Wow, I just read their customer testimonials page and see they've put me on there! I always emailed them telling them how awesome they are:

We'd like to thank you guys. Your team has been very helpful and thoughtful in supporting us throughout our early years. From our first days of just learning how to manage multiple servers, keeping them secure, and then scaling from a handful of users up to millions of users, the Rimu team has been there to guide us on some very keys steps along the way.)
How freaking cool is that, I didn't know they did that until just now! I think some of the other quotes there by "David" where left by me as well. I've had several accounts with them over the years as when working with different companies we'd often switch them over to Rimu.
Sorry for the long reply, its just cool to see all my gratitude didn't go unnoticed.
TBDR: Rimuhosting will not let you down.
