iPad content editing

Hello,

I've got several clients that now use iPads - they are all asking for the same thing... will I be able to edit my site using C5? I'm curious about this too. Whenever I try I can do almost EVERYTHING, accept bring up the WYSIWYG editor for pages. I'm assuming this is partly flash based like other elements of C5...

Any chance the devs might look into changing this to some HTML5 based WYSIWYG editor? I've got several people asking :-)

well, first pretty sure there is no flash in the current wysiwyg edito.

second, the core team is currently overhauling the dashboard for version 5.5

I'd like to think that they are fully aware that mobile platforms are critical to todays web environments, and will have that in mind in developing the new interface.

I personally am hopeful for responsive layout in the dashboard. At this point, that should be a given in my mind.

I hope so too. It would be nice to get an "official" confirmation of this from the devs though so I could go ahead and tell my clients that coming.

Would be very cool and convienient to visit a potential client and be able to give a demo on an IPAD. Would certainly save carrying the Macbook around London all the time.

we'd like to support gestures with in context editing better, and the new dashboard will be more mobile friendly.

I was thinking about this too, but there is no xampp like webserver currently for ipad to carry around your development environment

There are services that make it easy to serve a local website though a normal public URL, just for this kind of purpose:
http://showoff.io/
http://pagekite.net/
(and some open source ones if you have the time and know-how to set it up yourself and don't want to pay for a service):
https://github.com/progrium/localtunnel...
https://github.com/schacon/showoff...

These have nothing to do with iPad editing, but might help solve your problem of there being no webserver on an iPad.

There is no flash in the rich text editor. We use a customized version of tinymce:

http://www.tinymce.com/

It is known to not work on the iPad or iPhone currently. However, there is good. Apparently Apple has added the fundamental JavaScript feature to enable WYSIWYG editors to Webkit as of iOS 5:

So this should be coming soon.

That is useful to know with iOS 5, thanks for the link

YEAH! very good news there - if it just works on IOS5 thats obviously the best solution :-)

Ok.. IOS5 has in fact added the ability to use WYSIWYG editors on the ipad. You can see it for yourself on their demo page.

But.. Not with the version we're using with Concretet5? :(

didn't ya know... we expect our products to be updated 3 nano seconds after a release :-) (Evil wide grin)

Seriously though - just wondering about how long we might be looking at for a time table on this... month or so? I'd love to be able to send out a updated email to my clients saying something more than "soon" :-)

Thanks

On last week's chat show, the C5 team said that they are aiming and *hope* to have the next version by the end of November. But as with all complex software, there's no guarantee of that. So I don't think you'll get an official answer from them about a specific release date, but I personally would guess "hopefully end of Novemeber, probably end of year at the latest". Completely unofficial third-party guess here.

bummer, end of the year... 78 days... that 6739200000000000 Nanoseconds...

a few more than I was hoping for - but I guess to even have the option coming out to do this is a huge + It would still be nice to get some sort of official announcement however.

I'll be patiently waiting until then :-)

Or if someone needs this to all work now, suggest they use an Android Tablet. I've been using WYSIWYG editors and C5 on them since they were releases.

Had to jump in and say it. Couldn't resist. lol.

I have tried that... unfortuantly all my clients have said... "Android what?, no I want the ipad".

<shrug> thus... the question :-)

And yes... works perfectly fine on my android PHONE for crying out loud :-) <grumbles something about the ipad not being all that it could be>.

(grin).

LOL I know the feeling. I ended up ordering 25 Vizio Tablets, 4 Samsung 10.1 Galaxy Tablets and 2 high powered Minibooks. Now every presentation we do uses those products (vizio's for the presentees and the Samsungs for my sales staff to run the whole custom masde presentation with).

I also had to instruct all my sales staff to allow extra time so clients could play around with the Android Tablets after the presentation without our custom overlay enabled. This was because everyone wanted to know what we were using and how we did it.

I have 1 employee that takes her Ipad with her to show them the difference and I believe she takes her Atrixs phone too.

So that is what my company ended up doing and it worked out great for us. Funny how people are so stuck on one thing till something cool is done with another.
