JSON Error Underscores

Hi Everyone,
I've been wrestling with a regular but intermittent bug on a 5.7 install. The Apache errors seem to relate to:
There are others, but basically it seems to relate to the text helper (t). I saw in other posts this might relate to underscores in some way being affected.
Is anyone else experiencing this problem?
I believe I may have fixed it by removing the underscores from the update directory and changing accordingly in config. We'll see...
