Multi-Sites (sub-portals)

Hi All
First, again I would like to express my gratitude to the Concrete5 team. Great job!!!
Here is something I have read a few things on the forums about but no "real" answer has been given, that is, Multi-Site Management or sub-portals (you call them what you will).
I have this proposal for a company that will be HUGE if I get the contract. They are liking the idea of CMS but of course money is always an issue and I happened to show them Concrete5. So now my issues begin.
First, I know Joomla and Drupal have the functionality to manage multiple sites from one administration area. Everything site specific is handled by the database and each sub-site has its on layout (theme/template).
Secondly, tying everything together will be very time consuming. This company has 14 (that's right fourteen) companies tied to it under its parent LLC. So, dns management will be simple enough but the dynamic data can and will be used over multiple sites. So the database must be available to all sites.
Third, I am lucky in the sense that the templates/themes will probably be the same except for 2 known custom sites. I will still try and tie them in together.
Fourth (and final for now) is that I will want to create sections of the site(s) that are accessing employee data that is handled by the parent company.
SO...Can Concrete5 handle this? Is private (secure) sites capable via the permissions area of the admin area? Are there any examples that anyone knows about for this type of job.
I must say to the team, the way your static handling of data is great (I know its not really static) but for an end user wanting to edit a page, some of my clients are loving it. I have even trained a 76 year old Grand Ma how to edit content on pages. She LOVES it. Thanks Concrete5 team.

back at cha...tho they do have a crap load of community capabilities and lots and lots of add-ons
no doubt.. we need to get our forums in the marketpace and developers are really just starting to submit things for our inclusion there. We've been open source since last summer, so the lack of add-ons is certainly our big challenge. Same can be said for documentation here. there's no "c5 for dummies..." yet.
I can promise you safely tho, when we get our marketplace right, it'll be better than drupal's as well. ;)

Franz you and your team have done great things with this and we are definately blessed that you made C5 open source. I have been using Joomla for about 2 years and always found it to be cumbersome and heavy. So far, C5 has been pretty light. I can get it up and running on my host (I am a godaddy reseller) and the first time I had some growing pains but found the answers to fix it and its a no brainer now to install.
Some of the great features I enjoy on this system is by far the in-line editing capability. WOW!!!!!! What a great feature!!!! I taught my MOM how to edit pages and she is the 76 year old grandma mentioned above and not very computer savvy.
I would really like to learn more on your ways of making multi-sites work. I read your other forum posting on it but unfortunately, I am an independent developer and with that said...contracts are slow right now. I am really hoping to either get hired on to that company mentioned above at the beginning of this thread or at least get a contract. 14+ companies under its parent LLC. Each company only has a single page description and is very old. C5, I believe, will rocket them to the 21st century and using the Web 2.0 thought processes and I think C5 is the way to accomplish this. I can make a separate them for each company using almost the identical layout/color schema. The only issue I can see happening is developing an Admin sub-domain with SSL to allow employees to go in and update personal data and for the administrative folks to post pertinent data behind the SSL.
I haven't seen anything on the forums for this functionality and I may go ahead and start working on one. It would need a new table or 3 added to the C5 database but functionally, it really isn't a difficult build, just time consuming. Regardless of how I get it done (on my own or better, during the build of the new site(s) so i get PAID), I will trim it and document it thoroughly and post it to the forum for community use.
