im just an individual with a broad general problem .. im wondering how certain things work or if my perception on how concrete five can be used is even correct . so please if you have a bit of time and like to chat about how things you enjoy (<concrete5>) work , please reply or contact me . iv been reading and paying attention to the resources available . cant i just make blocks ?
oh jees , so i went ahead and deleted the default content on my newly installed c5 , with the bright idea that i could just start making blocks and bars. so now im bummin around trying to discover any shattered remains to relate tutorials and research to. So generally speaking , do i need to commit to a page type and theme to take off from or are there basic gestures i could build with to block and paint the page , like saving my own page-types and themes
C5 is pretty flexible, but if you are starting out, here is what I would suggest:
Start with a theme that you like. If you are new to C5 start with one of the built-in themes as they will cause you no headache and will just work for purposes of learning.
As far as page types go, that is a loaded question, as the term "page type" is actually a definition of a set of standard blocks that get added to any page of that specific page type.
If you are thinking of a "page type" as just something like the visual look of a page (one big column all the way down the page, a left hand or right hand column), then those are easily chosen, and changed later on if you would like.
The actual "page types" that you choose, however have some "default things" added to them. So, when you create a new page some default things will/might be added into the new page. That is controlled by the "page types" link on the dashboard, under each page type's "default" button. You can set those defaults there and all pages that are created with that page type applied will have those default formats/blocks/whatevers applied.
Is that what you were asking?

yes , i will have to re install c5 seeing how iv already deleted the included themes and page types , ultimately my question is if 'IM' able to create and save a set of standard blocks that get added to any page of that specific page type , useing g5's interface.
The answer is "yes"! Probably reinstalling is a good place to start, and just using the sample content. Either way (assuming the latest version of C5 5.5.1) login as admin, go to Dashboard-->Page Types-->then click on "defaults" for any of the page type, put the page into "edit mode", and make your changes.
All NEW pages that you create will have those blocks you added there show up.
One caveat that I found that will hopefully save you and others time, is that if you have any EXISTING pages of a given page type, changes you make to blocks in the defaults section will NOT show up automatically. You need to click on the newly added/changed block, and choose the "setup on child pages" then select any/all pages you want to see the block on.
This allows for pages that you already have to not be affected by global changes unless you desire them to be so as to not weird out your users, etc....

oh good news Nick! reinstalled now and will take it step by step of course . After the basics are learned , are there any avenues i can pursue that can assist with learning more , in the order of what i 'want' first , like c5 mercenaries ?
The best thing to do is to see a website in the showcase and try and re-create it. Also, play around with the highly-rated and free add-ons to see how those work and you will have a great start. That will teach you about how to size files to fit nicely in whatever theme you are working in, align things, etc....but really the good thing about C5 is that things are really pretty easy.
Nick thankyou so much , definitely going to do that.
Sounds like you have overall questions? Can you be a bit more specific? I will answer if I can, otherwise others in this forum are great resources....
