Permissions are a big headache !

Really I tried and tried , and if there is one thing I'm always getting mad with it is the permissions system. I think this is way too complex, and there is abslutly not clear documentation on this. Even the video does not bring solutions,it tells you you can do this or this ... but what it does not tell you is that onces you've done this, you cannot do this, otherwise it will mess up something when trying to set a permission somewhere else.
I also find very little support from the C5 team trying to help those like me who find themselves with the whole permission system fuckY5765 up and now not even being able to see a page !
I just don't get it guys ... most of the time all I need to do is to let my clients edit the text and nothing else, no need to add a block, or stack, no need to see any other menu that , edit and that's it... but I never managed to do this.

Everytime I think I am getting close to what I want I get the whole thing screwed again ... for instance, I love the fact that you can assign the same permissions to all subpages.... With this I can magically make all options disappear from the main "edit" button ... now when I get this done , and then I want to set all areas to just have no menu to show so users cannot add block or see design or any option .... and I want the block only to be edited and nothing else and this is when the nightmare begins, whith on one side something telling me "permissions ... currently override those of the page", then this pages permission depend on the page type ...anyway .... I really think permissions deserve some more documentation explaining , when we should be using permissions on a page type level, or block level, or area .... I just don't know .. and please ?? Just don't let us stuck and give us some way to reset all permissions...

Am I the only one having problems understanding those permissions ??

Yeah, with great power comes great... i dunno..

concrete5 ships out of the box with simple permissions for a reason. If you turn on advanced permissions you really can configure yourself into some pretty interesting holes. Everything in there works just as you'd expect it to, which can be quite overwhelming.

We are working on some more docs, which might help. I believe we do have a training class on this, including workflow, so its likely that content will be on youtube before long.

Long story short, yes, they are very advanced. ;)

BTW, I turned on Advanced Permissions by mistake. I think I saw somewhere that once turned on, they can't be turned off. Is that true?

Yup.
Too advanced to go back to simple.

Just like dropping acid.

Is there any way to reset all permissions if at some point we just screwed everything up without having to restore a backup and lose some work done ?

Nope but a wipe all permissions tool sounds like a great idea

Hi folks,

I wanted to let you all know that I've just put together some new documentation for Advanced Permissions:

http://www.concrete5.org/documentation/using-concrete5/dashboard/sy...

This should help explain the various options available to you and how they interact with one another. One thing I'd also like to mention is that that the admin user should always be able to change permissions on a page in case you've managed to "break" something.

We also have some new docs on Workflow here:http://www.concrete5.org/documentation/using-concrete5/dashboard/wo...
