Hi,
Total Noob here, sorry!
I'm in the process of investigating different software to create a virtual learning environment for my school. Initially I looked at Moodle but then to CMS.
The school wants to store documents, have password protected users, maybe a built in email system for users, a place for users to showcase their work and for staff to leave resources and homework!!
I know, I'm asking alot!!
Is concrete5 suitable for this? and if not could you kick me in a new direction!!
Thanks all

you might want to check out these two packages for displaying your files:

Thanks for the help. I'm now starting to make some pages and feel my way around the software.
Is it a difficult task to host and setup on a server at school? or would you recommend using concretes own hosting options?
My concern about hosting with concrete is that we would want all the students to have an email and that would be expensive.
Thaks for the help though,
Jon

I wouldn't recommend trying to host it at your school. if you don't go with concrete's hosting for some reason, then there are plenty of other dedicated hosting companies that you can go with that should allow unlimited email addresses. you should be able to get a dedicated box for under $100 per month, which is a lot cheaper than hiring your own server admin.
I second that. All our sites are hosted on our own server as we like to have full control.
Are you based in the UK or elsewhere?
If the UK i highly recommendhttp://www.zen.co.uk Never had a problem with them. We host over 30 sites with them and there support, the few times you need help, are superb!

Thanks for all the advice. Looking into hosting I realised to host with someone else would be far more beneficial!! Thanks,
I was looking at hosting with bluehost. They seem quite cheap and offer email etc. So I think that might be the way I go. I looked at Zen , but was unsure about the email. I probably give them a call later.
Thanks all for your help and advice.

Some elements would need some permission set up etc but C5 is more than suitable for this.
1. Storing docs is not problem. You can upload these into the C5 file manager and then list them on the site or secure area. Files can also be uploaded to the system through an uploader on the site (for students?)
2. Password protected users are no problem. This is like a client area that I created a how to video for...http://www.concrete5.org/documentation/how-tos/screencast-how-to-cr...
3. C5 has a built in email system.
4. Users would be able to upload work again through an uploader. Would need to be managed by admin as you don't want a load of porn being uploaded and viewed automatically! ;-)
5. Again, leaving files for others to download either for all users or specific to a single user can be done. (see video above)
6. C5 is the best!
Hope that helps!
Chris
