removing files from File Manager / Drive

when you remove/delete files from the file manager does it remove all version from the drive also? If not how would you clean it up?
it should remove every reference including the actual file
Hi can someone tell me how to delete files? I cannot find this. Someone else built the website for me and has uploaded every single file; now I am trying to sort and edit.

The file's details are removed from all the table in database except - FileSearchIndexAttributes table. I guess it wont affect.

deleting the actual file-version the file is removed from file-system and the reference in database, but not the other versions of this file.
Deleting a no-actual version of a file, nothing happens in file-system.
So my site is growing on and on, especially i often have to change rather large-scaled pdf-files.
Is this the normal behavior ?
How can i get rid of these files ?

removing files physicaly from the harddisk seems to be a discriminating question ?
That's annoying for me, because i use to develop my site on localhost at home and update the site time by time to my hoster. Meantime it takes more than 2 hours to upload only the file-directory with more than 3800 files and directories. Only one tenth is real content, nine tenth are redoubled files and empty direktories.
I tried to find out the reason for this behavior in the ducumentation, but i don't find a reasonable explanation, or a understandable description of the file-system.
My be i'm too stupid.
Is somebody here to give me a hint ?
