Required Fields for Composer

Hi All
Just looking for some suggestions as to how I could get fields within a Composer to be required and to not be able to be published until content, what ever it may be image or text etc, is entered.
A draft is OK but final publish must be able to spot the missing field and throw back an error message or a prompt.
Anyone done this before? How did you do it?
