Separating created thumbnail folder from original uploaded files

Hi,
Is there a way to separate generated thumbnails by C5 from the original uploaded file? Maybe store all thumbnails in /files/cache.
The reason is I don't want to add thumbnails to my repo. What seems more logical to me is to push only original files to the repo, and C5 will be able to generate thumbnails again on the server.
