Just been reading with interest this article at google

Wondering if Concrete5 by default can/does generate an automatic XML for webmasters to submit to google from time to time?

yes, go to maintenance in the dashboard and run the job and/or create a cronjob for it

I wish to generate a site map for Google but can't seem to find "maintenance in the dashboard"

Can you help?

It was a long time since it moved to a new location (this thread is 3,5 years old).

If you type 'sitemap' in intelligent search you will see some suggested locations. You should click on 'Automated Jobs' and run the job.

Dachboard > System & Settings > Optimization > Automated Jobs > Generate the sitemap.xml file

or as adajad said, enter the text 'Sitemap' into the dashbaord search and it will give you a link straight to the above page.

If you really want to sort this out, you can run the sitemap as a scheduled job once a day or week depending on how often your site is edited.

Use Cron (a system command), Nontab Scheduler (free addon), or my FlexJob Scheduler (paid addon).
