Slimming down C5 to upload
Permalink
Hello all,
I have just packaged up my C5 website and I am about to upload it to a live server but the file size is pretty large. I assume becuase this is of all the files that c5 stores for versioning... Is this true?
I was wondering if there was a way of slimming the package without breaking the website.
As the website is built I am no longer interested in the previous versions.
Is there something I could do to save on space and performance?
Thanks
D!!

Sorry, yes I did not mean actually slim down C5 itself... just all the supporting files, exactly how you have mentioned.
This sounds great though mesuva, I will have a play.
Any other advice on this subject would be great.
Many thanks

nope, you're going to pretty much need all of the files.
I didn't see anywhere where you listed the size of the site you are uploading, but I'm thinking that the large size may have to do with the files you have uploaded to the File Manager? Possibly big image files etc?
I don't know of anything you can do about that, but if that's the case your /files/cache/ directory could be a little big. You can safely delete everything in that directory. The /files/cache/ directory not the entire /files/ directory. Might help a little.

I now have had a little time to look around.
The entire site upload size is 198mb
Mesuva, You pretty much hit the nail on the head:
The main culprits are:
Updates: 63.4mb
Files/tmp: 83.7mb
These are all from the auto-updating process.
Question –
For updates: As I understand I can delete all update folders EXCEPT my current version (5.4.2.1) Folder, correct?
For files/tmp: Can I delete this content all together?
Many thanks for all your help
Alistair

I'm really not saying this to be "Moral of the Story Guy" or whatever, but I would only go down this path if it is extremely difficult/impossible to upload your site at the current size.
I would more look into breaking it up than trying to delete stuff.
I'm not saying you can't do it or that you're doing something terrible or anything, I'm just saying that this kind of stuff(although, very doable), isn't simple and may end up causing you more pain.
Please don't take this as being Debbie Downer, it's just that deleting the wrong stuff can get you in 90% works situations a month from now type stuff.
I really hope I don't come off as a jerk.
Best of luck,
Mike

Certainly not a jerk, you make a valid point.
Whilst I would tend agree with you aren't the files mentioned now redundant? As the update files, by its very nature, a process of superseeding the files, Surely this means that the old files can go?
if I were to update manually, as mentioned above, then this would naturally happen anyway.
I have no intention of deleting system files just the update files mentioned.
Thanks for the post though :)

For any files that you have uploaded, they'll take up space in the /files folders. When you 'replace' a file, concrete5 keeps the previous version, it doesn't overwrite or delete the previous file. So if you have something like a 10meg file that you have replaced 4 times, you'll have 40 meg additionally taken up.
You can go into the file manager, click on a file and select properties. In there, there is a versions sections (I think it's a tab), that allows you to view and delete older versions of files.
There are some other folders that sometimes contain unneeded files. I think there is a /temp directory that is used to download updates to that can be cleared if it has stuff in it.
Also, when you use the automatic updater, it will unzip another concrete directory into the /updates folder. I think that after you have done a few updates, you can end up with several copies of the concrete system in there, but you only need the latest.(Don't hold me to this though, I update my sites manually - just something to look into)
There isn't much you can do to slim down concrete5 itself I believe - it's a complex system and it requires a lot of files.
