span class code not pasting from scrapbook

I have some span class code:
That I paste into Content (or HTML) blocks to add tall, stylized vertical rules (that I can control in css) between and to separate articles and content categories on pages.
I copied this block to the scrapbook so my client will be able to just paste the stylized rule block in when she's editing her site, but for some reason these blocks will paste in, and be visible while in edit mode, but once I save changes and exit they disappear. If I go back into edit mode they're gone.
The only way to make them stick is to open a new Content or HTML block and paste the code in each time. This is fine for me, but I'll never be able to get her to do it. Is there a reason why blocks with this code, copied to the scrapbook, wouldn't stick after being applied from the scrapbook?
I'm stumped.
