TinyMCE not doing as it's told

I have a client who is using v.5.4.0 & when she tries to copy & paste from Word using the W icon in the TinyMCE editor the styling is still set as per word.
She's using IE8 & Word 2007.
She often has the problem that often when she goes to edit an existing Content block that she doesn't see a cursor & can't type into the editor. She has to close & go back in.
Has anyone else had this problem or have a solution.

cut and paste to notepad first to clean it up
make sure there aren't any goofy extensions on ie8
use a different browser.
