Transfer an existing C5 eCommerce website from one host to another

HI,

Just wondered how easy it is to transfer an existing C5 eCommerce website (as it currently is) from one web developers hosting solution to another web developers hosting solution? Particularly concerning all the free and paid for add-ons which are assigned to the website via the original web developers C5 account, can these be transferred as well (if so how) as the the license is assigned to the original developers C5 account?

I can't see how this can be done, without the new web developer having to buy and reinstall the add-ons again, which effectively is a rebuild of the site, isn't it?

Has anyone experienced this before and if so, please can you share how you (hopefully seamlessly) achieved this?

Thanks

David

- Clone the site (backup voodoo),

- create the cloned site on the new host,

- disconnect it from the marketplace (but leave the addons in place) (I usually do this by deleting the config table entry using phpMyAdmin, but you could also edit the sql file before installing the clone),

- connect to the marketplace as a new project,

- buy the addons and allocate to the new project

The cloned site now owner of the newly purchased addons and will continue to get updates etc.

Thank you John,

I kind of thought the answer might like this, as marketplace items are only sold "under license".

But this makes it also worth noting (although I'm no lawyer) that marketplace add-ons and templates are non-transferable in your business terms, because as you have confirmed, they will be have to be purchased again for use on "another designers" hosting solution.

I imagine that most clients think that once they've paid for it, it's their property to do as they want.

I always try and make this clear.

I have used John's Voodoo back-up to clone an e-commerce site flawlessly! Re-skinned with new theme - edited product etc - paid for new add-ons - Viola! New e-commerce store in a fraction of the time :)

Your question does bring something to mind however: I have, in the past, re-used an add-on from a site that I took down and the license was then unassigned. I assume an "unassigned" license is still available to apply to a new site.... am I wrong?

Yes, I have reused licenses for sites I have taken down. Not sure, but thought you had to uninstall them first.
