Using "Design" and "Custom Template"

Hi Guys,

when I work with concrete5, I often happens following mistake:
In "Edit" overlay and the Block drop down menu I can assign "Templates". Both (similar) functions using different icons and descriptions ("Design" / "Custom Template"). But in Block drop down the function "Set Block Styles" uses the same Icon and description (Design) as "Design" (assign a Theme/Page type) in Edit overlay. This is confusing.

Would have to disagree on that one, the top "Design" menu is in the page specific level, but the "Design" menu you are comparing it to, is a block level menu, they both have the same icon as they are both design specific just at different levels, one page, one block. And a custom template is entirely different from making tweaks to CSS using the design options :)

I agree about "custom templates", that's something different.

Personally, I'd have thought about using "Page Design" instead of "Design". We're using the exact same word and icon, while the functionality is similar, it's not the same.

It really should be page template, not design, shouldn't it?

I like the following:

Page: 'Design'
Area: 'Area Design'
Block: 'Block Design'
Custom Template: 'Custom View'

(See attached screenshots)

The word 'template' has too many other meanings across different systems and I don't think the jargon is necessary.

To me it's mostly about having a different word for the "Design".

Page Template would be okay as well as "Block Design" and "Area Design"

I would still argue design is the most appropriate term, "Design" from the edit drop down, doesn't just encompass changing the page template, you can also change the entire theme, which to me is a "Design" oriented task.

But I do agree that if anything was going to be re-worded then it would just boil down to that one "Design" button/link, I think everything else is pretty semantic. personally though I think, if it isn't broke....

You are right - but why using same icon and description for different thinks in pages and blocks/areas? This is not helpful for users to get an orientation how thinks work. concrete5 is very easy to handle for users/customers but in this case this is confusing for someone who has no experience in php/css but has to know "here you can choose something" and "here you can change something by yourself".

Yes, I can see your point there, I guess I dont think about it too deeply as I have been using C5 for a while now, but I do take the point that brand new users may find it a little disorienting.

I think so. Because in blocks and areas the meaning of "design" is to customize margin, borders, css by myself - so the user will "design" the block or area. But for pages there is nothing to design - the user just can choose a style or theme, like choosing a (custom) template in blocks.
So behind "Design" in page and blocks/areas is definitely not the same action. That is confusing for users. Especially they using the same Icons.
