Website appearance/description in search results

Hey all..newbie here..you know how when one does a google search and when the websites are listed, there is often valuable info nestled within the listings? For example this is a rough example of how mapquest's listing looks in google - the top line and bottom lines are blue, tho:

What do I do to manipulate the appearance of my website's listing in a search engine? Does it have to do with "meta title", "meta description" or "meta keywords" ?
thank you!!

META tags are not usually used for that information in most major search engines today.

Instead, Google for example, will pull text off the page so your main content area text is what is used. Google most commonly makes this decision itself.

Its also important to use heading tags like h1, h2, h3, etc...
