What is a CMS and why does it matter?

Hi all

I just got a scathing email blasting me about calling WordPress a Blog Engine and NOT a Content Management System. Now at one point, WordPress stated they were a blogging and publishing system. Now (this is on their site) they are calling themselves a CMS.

So, my question is this, what constitutes a TRUE CMS and does it really matter what a system is called as long as the end goal is met?

Thanks (and this isn't intended as a flame war, so if anyone starts it, I will delete the thread.)

Bill

I would say wordpress has always been a cms.
Content Management System enables us to manage our content.
Some better than others but that's the ultimate goal.
If wordpress added CMS to their slogan now, well to it has always been, so maybe their trying to clarifiy the non technical/ or non informed people about it.

Content Management Systems in the traditional sense in probably closer to what Concrete5 is than Wordpress.

CMS has become a catch all for high level site creation tools like worpress/drupal/joomla/concrete5/plone/radiant/etc etc but the traditional sense a CMS is really something a University or large corporation would use. Something with many departments with no technical users managing their internal documents and information content to be consumed by the public and internally.

Language evolves over time and any CMS discussion is really just going to turn into a discussion of semantics and a particular persons current idea of what that phrase means to them.
