What is happening with concrete 5?

HI,
Used concrete5 for years with no real problems. Now, where do i start?
My web hoster allows for download of 5.6.4 or 8.5.2
I like 5.6 so I install but cannot add any themes or add ons. They are no longer supported
(i have several sites running on 5.xx how do I work with them in future? Why was 5.6 updated this year in downloads?)
OK. So all old stuff obsolete.
I install 8.5.2 ...
Buggy as hell. No point even listing.
Very little compatible plug ins or themes seem to be available. The filter on the marketplace does not filter for 8.5.
Tried to buy a theme....system would not accept payment either by paypal or credit card.
I do not think i can use concrete5 for development. Loads of bugs, almost no third party development. payment issues. no way to contact anyone. Complete disaster.

When that happens it truly sucks, I can understand your frustration.
Having said so Concrete5 is stable, and happily used by thousands of websites so I would tend to agree with @hutman.
As far as buying on the marketplace is concerned, if you have problems I suggest you join the official slack channelhttps://www.concrete5.org/slack... and contact user @myq who handles communication for the core team. He is extremely helpful.
Concerning compatibility issues, it is true that a version filter would be more than welcome. Still, most (unfortunately not all) plugins and themes here work out of the box.
Any plugin or theme marked compatible with Concrete5 version 8 or above will work with the latest version. Any marked compatible with 5.7 or above will have a good chance to also work with version 8. A few might break but then you can ask for a refund if they do.

I'm still s little worried about load time and some of the bugs I've seen (constant reminders to publish, even when page is saved and published).

But 5.6 is EOL, there was an update earlier this year to make it PHP7 compatible but there will not be anymore and the 5.6 Marketplace was closed up. For your existing sites you will have to maintain them yourself or rebuild using 5.8.
5.8 only runs on PHP7 so if you tried to install using an older version that will cause many problems, without knowing what issues you ran into during install it's hard to help you get things installed.
